While both Joey and Jessamyn were are at their dance lessons every Saturday morning, Jocie and I have an hour to play together. Here are some shots from earlier today outside Steps dance studio.
The pale yellow dress...so perfectly feminine and delicate for such a beautifully feminine and delicate Jocie! With perfectly coordinating pink and feminine yet stable and sensible shoes.
Yes, I did see the question... hrmm, how to answer that.
It's really a very simple technique to follow.
After removing the training wheels from the bike, the first step is to create a game with the student.
The game is to put the child on the seat of the bike and for the teacher to hold the back of the seat. Now, you instruct the student that when you tip the bike slightly to the left, they turn the wheel slightly to the left. When you tip slightly to the right, they should turn the wheel slightly to the right. And when they are in the middle, they should straighten out the wheel.
As soon as the student can correctly "play" the game for a length of time (several minutes), then the next step is to start moving them forward while instructing them to keep playing the game.
As you push them forward, they will start to tilt one direction or the other as would be expected during a bike ride. You help the student to keep "playing the game".
Once they are comfortable with this part of the game, the next step is to phase out the teachers direct contact and to have the student start to pedal the bike and create/maintain momentum.
It's sounds like a sensible way to get the child to learn how to balance. Tell your friend that he could have been an Occupational Therapist. The technique is so similar to what we use in activity analysis, but has the added 'flavor' of being a game!! I like it :) Love, Diane

And that is the game/technique.

Thanks Jay,
