Joey’s 5th Birthday

Today is it!!! Today is the day!!! Today is Joey’s birthday!!!

He was awoke by his mother early this morning to celebrate his birthday with the family before we each had to head out for the days events. Jenny had spent hours getting the kitchen table just right for his birthday morning private celebrations before he went to school. Steamers were hung from the doorway, his chair wrapped with varying colors of tissue paper, presents set out for him, and early morning plans for his favorite breakfast of pancakes were made late last night.

In the morning, all plans were executed with great success and met with joy by Joey who was ever to excited to be the center of the morning's attention.

This is the first birthday that he has really anticipated. He has known for weeks that this day was coming and he has been telling everyone he knows that it is going to be his firth birthday.

As of a month ago, Joey wasn’t too sure that he wanted to turn five. He had actually protested the eventuality in favor of a second ‘fourth’ birthday. Weeks ago a discussion was had between mother and son during which he made clear his desires to actually turn ‘five’, much to my chagrin.

Since that point, we have been party to an endless dialogue about the impending birthday event from our eldest child. He has been very determined that this is HIS birthday and that he is going to have it regardless of our contrarian misgivings.

Another round of weeklong birthday parties and events is in his schedule that was kicked off this morning.

Undoubtedly the ceremonial birthday celebrations will not take on the extreme nature that became a month long event for his fourth birthday. Hopefully he will settle for just three of four parties this year….
