It's a simple technique I derived from some pro portrait books I've got using an off-camera flash. In this case, I opted for a wide-angle lens (16mm on DX which is 24mm on 35mm/FX) from a low position (I was sitting on the floor) to elongate the kids legs and make them seem "larger than life", and I place my flash on the floor tilted upwards to produce a dramatic lighting effect. Then, it was just a matter of waiting for the subjects to be in just the right position. Joey had it easy, and he posed in that position for a couple of minutes. Jess, on the other hand, couldn't quite get the hang of it, so Jenny placed the chair on top of her, and she held it for a couple of seconds before collapsing and falling to the floor, but the interval was just long enough for me to snap the shot that is posted here. Joey insisted on taking the picture in the middle and designed the facial expression... that's all him.
